Monument to Vyacheslav Chornovil in Kyiv

Vyacheslav Chornovil (1937-1999) - literary critic, journalist, member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, one of the founders and head of the People's Movement of Ukraine, People's Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Hero of Ukraine (2000). One of the founders of the sixties movement, human rights defender, co-author and distributor of protest documents, he was imprisoned and exiled in 1967-69, 1972-78, 1980-83. Died in a car accident under unknown circumstances. He was buried at Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.

The monument to Vyacheslav Chornovil was installed at the beginning of Hrushevskoho Street, opposite the Dynamo stadium named after Valery Lobanovskyi. It was unveiled on August 23, 2006, on the eve of the 15th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence. The President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and other high-ranking officials took part in the opening ceremony.

The place for the monument was not chosen by chance - it is located opposite the building where the headquarters of the People's Movement of Ukraine was located in 1989. The height of the bronze monument is 5 meters, and its weight is 6.5 tons.
