Imam Shamil (1797 – 1871) is a national hero of Dagestan, the leader of the national liberation struggle of the North Caucasian peoples during the Caucasian War (1817–1864). In 1834, he was proclaimed an imam, united Western Dagestan and Chechnya, then Cherkessia into the theocratic state of the Imamate.
In 1868-69, Imam Shamil lived in Kyiv in the Mosolova estate (on the corner of Oleksandrivska and Kriposna streets), which has not been preserved - today there is a house at the address below. A memorial plaque to Imam Shamil was installed on the facade of this building in 1990. Under the bas-relief there is an inscription in Dagestan and Ukrainian: "Here was a house where in 1868-1869 lived one of the founders of friendship between the Ukrainian and Dagestan peoples, the national hero of Dagestan Shamil." In 2015, the plaque was reconstructed - a granite frame appeared around it, and a golden coating was applied to the relief of the monument.
