Monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky in Kyiv

The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky in Kyiv is located in the very center of the city on Sofia Square. It was erected more than 100 years ago and it is the third oldest monument in Kyiv and one of the main sights and business cards of the Ukrainian capital. The monument is dedicated to one of the most famous Ukrainians - Hetman and founder of the Cossack state Bohdan Khmelnytsky (1595-1657). The solemn opening of the monument took place on July 23, 1888 as part of the festive events dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus. Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky is depicted riding on a dashing horse. He holds a mace in his right hand, turned back, pointing to the northeast. The sculpture is distinguished by the complexity of angles and clarity of contours, careful processing of details.
