Mykola Hohol (1809–1852) is a novelist, poet, publicist, one of the classics of Ukrainian literature. 68 of his works have reached us. The most famous are: "Evenings on a Farm near Dykanka", "Myrhorod", "Taras Bulba", "Dead Souls", "Revisor", "Viy", "Nise". By the way, based on the motives of the last work, a separate monument was created in Kyiv on Desyatynna Street.
The writer visited Kyiv several times. He came for the first time in 1827 during the spring vacation. Stopped at Podil. Kyiv enchanted Hohol with its parks and ancient monuments, but most of all with the spring Dnipro. Perhaps it was from that time that our city became a city of hope for the then young man. Here he dreamed of writing a book about the history of Ukraine and publishing a collection of Ukrainian songs. In general, Hohol wanted to buy a house in Kyiv and stay in the ancient city. Another one Mykola Vasyliovych came to Kyiv in 1835. Then he visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, St. Sophia Cathedral, ancient city fortifications. The writer last visited Kyiv in 1848, where he stayed with his friend in Podil. The writer often climbed St. Andrew's Hill, visited St. Andrew's Church, and also visited the city's outskirts. Mykola Hohol expressed his love for the ancient city in his work, often referring to it in his works.
The monument to Mykola Hohol is located in the left bank of Kyiv in Rusanivka. It was unveiled on August 13, 1982 - the year of the 130th anniversary of the writer's death.
The bronze half-figure of the writer (height 2.95 meters) is mounted on a high pedestal (5.55 meters) and a stylobate (0.35×6.7×6.7 meters), lined with labradorite. The sculptor reproduced the characteristic features of Hohol's appearance.
