Monument to Oleksandr Shalimov

Oleksandr Shalimov (1918-2006) is a famous surgeon, one of the founders of the Ukrainian surgical school, doctor of medical sciences, professor, Hero of Ukraine. O. Shalimov performed about 40,000 operations, wrote more than 830 scientific works and made 112 inventions, founded two research institutes - in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Oleksandr Oleksiyovych became the first doctor who performed a successful pancreas transplant on a diabetic patient, developed and implemented new methods of operations for oncological diseases, as well as digestive organs, blood vessels, and the heart. Under Shalimov's leadership, the first heart transplant operation in Ukraine was performed. In 1998, by the decision of the International Chamber of the American Biographical Institute, the Ukrainian surgeon was recognized as a Person of the Planet.

The monument to Oleksandr Shalimov was erected at the entrance to the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology, which he headed since 1972 and which now bears his name. The opening of the monument took place on February 14, 2014.
