There is an opinion that the fountain "Samson" in Podil is the oldest fountain in Kyiv. It was built in 1749 according to the project of the famous Kyiv architect and Baroque master Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi. The client was the city magistrate, and the money for the fountain was collected by the people of Kyiv. The reservoir of the fountain was part of the ancient city water supply. In the middle of the pavilion was a wooden sculpture of an angel with a ladle in his hands, from which water poured. But it did not last long - the great Podil fire of 1811 almost completely destroyed the fountain-pavilion. The creation in the Ukrainian Baroque style - the figure of the biblical character Samson, who tears the lion's mouth open, was installed in 1808. At first, the sculpture was made of wood, later it was replaced with a concrete one. In 1934, the fountain was destroyed. The sculptural composition was restored in 1981 - for the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv.
