Mural "Berehynya" ("Protectress")

Mural «Berehynya» («Protectress»)

The mural "Berehynya" ("Protectress") adorns the side wall of the building located on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. It can be seen when going down Taras Shevchenko Lane towards the city center.

The author is a Latin American artist from Costa Rica, Mata Ruda (Karl Miller Espinoza), who lives in Arizona (USA). Mata's works decorate the facades of houses in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Russia and dozens of cities throughout the United States (Phoenix, Newark, Brooklyn). In her work, the artist depicts the topic of immigrants, which is close to her, illustrates local cultures and talks about contemporary social problems.

The Kyiv mural of Mata Ruda depicts Berehynya, a female spirit in Slavic mythology. On this panel, we see a portrait of an immigrant woman from Azerbaijan framed by sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine, and a traditional Ukrainian floral scarf. According to the author, the peculiarity of this mural is that it is located a few steps away from a very powerful place - Maidan Nezalezhnosti, where the Ukrainian revolution took place in 2014.

"Berehynya" was created as part of the Art United Us project. Work on the mural was completed on July 24, 2016.

Address: Taras Shevchenko Lane, 1/2.
