St. Nicholas “Chornobyl” Church in Kyiv

The Church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on Tatarka is located in a picturesque place in the hills near the Smorodynsky Descent, which leads to Kurenivka.

The outline of the temple, which is unique for church architecture, in particular, resembles the shape of the 4th power unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, due to the purpose for which it was built. The temple is a part of the Memorial Complex in memory of the victims of Chernobyl, the construction of which was started in 1991, when the foundations of the building were laid. Direct construction was carried out intermittently in 2005-2011 according to the project of academician of architecture Mykola Zharikov. The church is single-domed, at the base it has the shape of an octagonal star, which is an allusion to the Star of Bethlehem and the Dawn of Wormwood - one of the types of wormwood is called Chornobyl.

The Church of St. Nicholas was damaged as a result of a rocket attack on Kyiv on March 21, 2024. In particular, glass was broken, and a gap formed near the building.

Together with the Chornobyl Church, a memorial bell and a symbolic burial mound were made. At this place, every year on the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy, events are held with the participation of liquidators of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, relatives of deceased liquidators, residents of the area, etc.
