Taras Shevchenko Park in the center of Kyiv is part of the outstanding architectural and landscape complex of Kyiv University.
The park was opened in 1887. In the following years, three reservoirs were arranged here, two with fountains, and one in the shape of the Black Sea with the Crimean Peninsula lined with stone, which has survived to this day. The gardener skillfully divided the territory into parts by two perpendicular alleys, which intersected to form a small platform in the middle. In 1896, a monument to the Russian Emperor Nicholas I was erected on it. In 1918, the monument to the emperor was demolished. In 1939, a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected on the remaining pedestal in honor of the 125th anniversary of his birth. After that, the square was given its modern name, Taras Shevchenko Park.
The park is a traditional meeting place for students. On warm days, the park gathers amateur chess players and dance enthusiasts. The trees in Shevchenko Park are dominated by maple, sycamore, linden, chestnut, ash, birch, and there are also some specimens of birch, white acacia, catalpa, various types of poplar, oak, and more. The lawn in the southeastern part of the park has a rose garden and a rock garden.
Interesting fact: Shevchenko Park is home to the oldest public restroom in Kyiv, which was opened in 1890.
The address is Volodymyrska Street.
