Tombstone on the grave of Yevhen Afanasyev

Yevhen Afanasyev (1837-97) - therapist, professor of medicine, head of the department of separate pathology and therapy of St. Volodymyr Kyiv University, public figure. In 1879, he headed a special sewage commission under the City Duma, which discussed the problem of radical rehabilitation of Kyiv through the construction of sewers and drew up the first city sewer project. In 1890, he was elected chairman of the board of the joint-stock Kyiv sewerage company. He initiated the establishment of a free hospital for manual workers. In 1894-1897, he was a member of the hospital committee and provided consultations to patients, gave a course of lectures for university students at the hospital.

Yevhen Afanasyev is buried in the necropolis of the Vydubychi monastery, namely near the St. George cathedral church. The granite tombstone is made in the form of a small chapel on a four-sided pedestal, which is completed by a semicircular vault. Its corners are decorated with semi-columns of the Corinthian order, which are supported by triangular pediments. A marble sculptural bust of the professor is installed in a niche on the main side of the tombstone. The pedestal consists of two parts: the upper one is decorated with columns of the Tuscan order, the lower one is rectangular, with a plinth, decorated on the front side with a relief image of a mourning wreath.
