Viktor Subotin (1844-1896) was one of the pioneers of hygiene science and hygiene teachers in Ukraine. In 1867, he graduated from the Medical Faculty of Kyiv University and then completed his residency in internal medicine. In 1871, the School of Medicine was one of the first in the Russian Empire to establish the Department of Hygiene, Medical Police, Medical Geography and Statistics, which was headed by Professor Subbotin from its inception until 1893. In 1884, he was appointed dean of the School of Medicine. During this time he devoted himself to the active implementation of innovations in the activities of the faculty and improvement of educational and scientific work. The period of Viktor Subbotin's deanship was marked by the largest number of talented graduates whose names remain in the history of national and world medicine: pathologist Podvysotskyi, ophthalmologist Shymanovskyi, dermatovenerologist Nikolskyi. The scientist is the author of more than 50 scientific works on nutritional physiology, physiology and occupational hygiene, general and municipal hygiene, including hospital hygiene, water sanitation, epidemiology and teaching hygiene. He is the author of the first textbook on hygiene.
A bronze plaque to Viktor Subotin was unveiled on June 8, 2012. The plaque is installed on the facade of the administrative building of the National Medical University, in the house where Professor Subotin and his family lived in 1871-1898.
