Senior Lieutenant Ivan Zubkov with the call sign "Krab" took part in assault operations to unblock Ukrainian units defending the Donetsk airport. The military man died on January 20, 2015 as a result of an explosion of the airport terminal by Russian militants, personally covering the departure of the unit. By decree of the President of Ukraine, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Golden Star Order.
A memorial plaque to Ivan Zubkov is installed on the facade of the main building of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. It was opened on June 19, 2023.
