Sholom Aleichem (1859-1916) was a writer from the Kyiv region. He wrote most of his works in Kyiv and Lviv. He lived in the Ukrainian capital in 1887-1907. In the Kyiv period, he wrote the stories "Tevye the Milkman", "Menachem-Mendel", "Railway Stories".
In 1903-1905, the writer lived in apartment No. 4 of building No. 27 on Saksaganskoho Street. In 1988, a memorial bronze plaque to Sholom Aleichem was installed on the facade of the building with his high-relief portrait against the background of relief images of scenes from Jewish life.
