The "Road of Death" monument in Lukyanivka

The

The "Roads of Death" monument is one of the memorable places of the "Babi Yar" historical-memorial reserve.

Here, from September 29, 1941 to October 1943, the German occupation authorities exterminated more than 100,000 people. For a long time, the Soviet authorities tried to keep the tragedy in Babi Yar quiet. It was only after a large spontaneous rally on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, which took place on September 29, 1966, that it began to be talked about at the state level.

The memorial sign "Road of Death" was unveiled on September 29, 2011, on the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the tragic events in Babi Yar. The monument is a three-meter obelisk made of concrete with many footprints. On a granite stone next to the stele is written: "The "Road of Death" began here, along which on September 29, 1941, the fascist occupiers drove the Jews to be shot in Babi Yar." According to the author, sculptor Kostyantyn Skrytutskyi, the monument was made in only three days; at the same time, there were also more complex versions of the bronze monument, which were impossible to realize in a short time.

Address: 83A Yu. Illenka Street.
