"Mirror Field" is an audiovisual installation symbolizing the Tree of Life and dedicated to the tragedy of Babi Yar.
The symbol of the Tree of Life is found in most religions and mythologies. It symbolizes the unity of the world: life and death, earth and sky, past and future. The tragedy of Babi Yar shows how easily this tree can be destroyed.
The "Mirror Field" is a forty-meter mirror disk with high mirrored metal columns. They were shot through with a hundred thousand bullets of the same caliber that killed people at this place. Here a man meets himself and sees his reflection, pierced by bullets. Every hour a sound is heard from the holes themselves, in particular, voices list the names of the victims of Babi Yar. The installation operates 24/7 and at night, rays of light pass through the bullet holes.
The opening of the "Mirror Field" took place on September 29, 2020. This is the day of remembrance for the victims of Babi Yar, one of the most terrible symbols of the Holocaust. On this day in 1941, mass executions of Kyivans by the German invaders began in Babi Yar. The author of the idea and concept of installation is sound engineer Maxim Demidenko.
