The Monument to Mikhail Bulgakov in Kyiv was located on the slope of Uzdykhalnytsia Mountain in the lower part of Andriyivskyi Uzviz. It was installed to the right of the house where Professor Afanasiy Bulgakov’s family lived from 1906 to 1922. The writer himself resided in this building from 1906 to 1913, and today it houses his memorial museum.
Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940) was a physician, writer, playwright, and director. In Kyiv, the writer was born, graduated from the medical faculty of Kyiv University, and got married. He lived in our city for 28 years — more than half of his life.
It is worth noting that this was the first monument to Bulgakov in the world. It was unveiled on October 19, 2007. The idea for the monument originated with the staff of the literary museum long before that, but for a long time there were not enough funds to implement it. The monument itself took five years to create. By the way, the Moscow monument was opened one year after the Kyiv one. In addition, in 2011 a small monument was installed in Bucha near Kyiv (where the Bulgakov family’s country house once stood).
About the monument itself: The writer is depicted in bronze at full size. He is sitting on a bench with one leg crossed over the other and his hands folded on his chest. The sculptural composition stands on a granite pedestal, which is approached by several steps.
The Monument to Mikhail Bulgakov in Kyiv was dismantled on June 4, 2026.
Interestingly, the monument was originally planned to be installed at the very beginning of Andriyivskyi Uzviz, roughly where the well-known monument to Pronya Prokopivna and Golokhvastov now stands.
