Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913) - was one of Ukrainian literature's foremost writers, best known for her poems and plays. She was also an active political, civil, and feminist activist. Among her best-known works are the collections of poems On the Wings of Songs, Thoughts and Dreams, Echos, the epic poem Ancient Fairy Tale, One Word, plays Princess, Cassandra, In the Catacombs, and Forest Song.
The life and work of Lesya Ukrainka are closely connected with Kyiv. The writer lived on Saksaganskoho street 97 and 101, Striletska street 15 and at other addresses. She was buried at the Baikove cemetery. A boulevard, street and square in the capital are named after the poetess. There are two more monuments and a memorial plaque installed here.
The monument to Lesya Ukrainka on Pechersk is installed next to the building of the Kyiv Regional State Administration. It was built in 1970 to mark the 100th anniversary of the poetess’s birth.
The monument is a composition of equal-height bronze sculptures and a tetrahedral pedestal made of polished black granite, mounted on a large rectangular granite stylobate. The monument is distinguished by its realistic reproduction of portrait features and expressive composition. On the front side of the pedestal are lines from her poem.The composition of the monument is complemented by a pool with a granite border around the base, the reflection in which creates an additional emotional effect.
