Volodymyr Vernadsky (1863-1945) - mineralogist, crystallographer, founder of geochemistry, biogeochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, noosphere and biosphere studies, naturalist, philosopher, public figure, first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He developed a theory about the leading role of living beings in geochemical processes and an evolutionary theory of the origin of minerals.
In Kyiv, Vernadsky lived on the Tarasivska 10 and Mykilsko-Botanichna 1/16 streets. The National Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the boulevard in the Sviatoshynskyi district are named after him.
At the beginning of this boulevard there is a monument to Volodymyr Vernadsky. It was unveiled on March 12, 1981, on the scientist's 118th birthday.
The monument, 6 meters high, is made of a monolithic block of red granite, mounted on a low stylobate and a cubic pedestal. The scientist is depicted sitting in an armchair and holding a piece of mineral in his left hand. An inscription with the name and dates of life is carved in the upper part of the front side of the pedestal. On the reverse side are the authors and the year of construction.
