Monument to Borys Hrinchenko

Borys Hrinchenko (1863-1910) - writer, translator, literary critic, linguist, theoretician and historian of Ukrainian lexicography, folklorist, ethnographer, publicist, publisher, social and cultural activist. In Kyiv, Hrinchenko worked on the first "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language", which was published in 4 volumes and contained 69 thousand words.The dictionary presents the vocabulary of the literary language of the 19th century, folklore, most Ukrainian dialects, and the orthographic system introduced in it formed the basis of the spelling code of the Ukrainian language. This ethnographic and encyclopedic guide is rightly called Hrinchenko's dictionary.

A monument to Borys Hrinchenko is placed on the alley leading to the administrative building of the National University, which bears his name. The monument was created at the expense of students and teachers of the university and education workers of the capital on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The grand opening took place on August 22, 2011.

The monument is a bronze bust of the writer, mounted on a granite pedestal. With his left hand, Hrinchenko rests on a stack of four books - a dictionary of the Ukrainian language created by him. On the front side of the pedestal are his words: "Ukraine. This word is everything for me."
