The monument to Prince Volodymyr on Volodymyrska Hill is the second oldest monument in Kyiv and one of its most famous monuments.
Prince Volodymyr the Great ruled on the Kyiv throne in 978–1015. The idea of building a monument arose among the city public at the beginning of the 19th century. The first project was created in 1835. The bronze figure was cast in 1847 in St. Petersburg. The solemn opening ceremony of the monument to Prince Volodymyr took place on September 28 / October 10, 1853. The 4.4-meter bronze sculpture is mounted on an 8-sided 16-meter cast-iron pedestal in the form of a chapel and a 5-step stylobate made of cast-iron plates. The total height of the monument is 20.4 m.
At the end of the 19th century, the park on Volodymyrska Hill was formed approximately in its current form. Even then, the city authorities wanted to somehow "revive" the monument of the Baptist of Rus. In 1895, the Kyiv philanthropist Semyon Mogilevtsev donated funds for the organization of electric illumination of the cross, which was restored during the years of Independent Ukraine.
