Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is the most outstanding Italian poet, whose figure is as important for Italy as Shota Rustaveli for Georgia or Taras Shevchenko for Ukraine.
The monument to Dante Alighieri in Kyiv was erected in the year of the poet's 750th birthday. The solemn opening ceremony took place on December 10, 2015, although the monument was installed in July and was wrapped in a white cloth. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko and Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Romano took part in the opening.
The figure of Dante is made in full height. The poet is dressed in a toga, a wreath is on his head, and a scroll is in his hand. An eagle sits at his feet. Next to the sculpture there are three benches of an unusual shape. All three parts of the composition are made in different styles: the poet - in a kind of "hewn", the eagle - classical, and the benches - futuristic. The material used was a rare and expensive material - Carrara white marble.
