On July 28, Ukraine celebrates the national holiday of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, and according to the Orthodox calendar, it is the day of memory of the holy prince Volodymyr, the baptizer of Kyivan Rus. Volodymyr the Great (960-1015) took the throne of the Grand Prince of Kyiv in 978. At that time, Kyivan Rus was torn by civil strife. After 35 years of rule, he left behind a huge and powerful state that was respected and feared by both Byzantium and Europe.
