Old fountain in Lypky

In the courtyard of houses at the intersection of Institutska and Shovkovychna streets, a quiet park, created back in the 1930s, is hidden from the gaze of pedestrians. In its center there is a fountain, which, like the courtyard, has its own interesting history.

In the 19th century, this place was a two-story house-palace with a vast garden - the residence of the Kyiv, Volyn and Podolsk governors-general. In 1920, it served as the residence of Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky, then as the office of the Chekists. But in the same year, Polish troops blew it up during the retreat from the city. The garden has been partially preserved from the residence. In 1925, it was transformed into a garden of the trade union of Soviet and trade employees, a sports ground and a summer theater were equipped there.

1950s

By the end of 1934, a residential complex was erected at the above-mentioned intersection of streets, intended for government officials. A park was arranged in the courtyard, where trees from the former Governor-General's garden remained, benches, gazebos, decorative statues were installed, and a fountain was placed in the center. The bowl of the fountain was made of artificial stone and covered with relief images of boys and girls of athletes. The fountain was a popular object among the inhabitants of Lypky.

During the years of Independent Ukraine, the fountain stopped working and by 2000 fell into disrepair. It was surrounded by a fence, and the pool of the fountain was covered with debris. Once a bowl with the image of athletes disappeared without a trace, and after a while it was replaced by a copy of Chinese marble with minor changes.

Address: 20/8 Instytutska street.
